Do you have templates for my boat already?
Although we have made custom items for most boats before, we ask for a new template for every boat because each is unique and the small variations between each one can affect the fit of the final product. If we have a suitable template for the yacht, motorboat or narrowboat bed you need, then we can send a copy to you for just £15 which you can amend and send back to us as your own perfect template!
I don’t have any measurements or a template; can you still get me a quote?
Of course! If you let us know your boat, make and model then we can take a look at the plans and find out whether you need readymade or custom items and what these will cost. To make custom items a perfect fit, we will require a template or dimensions from you.
My mattress is an odd shape, how do I measure it?
For custom items we ask for either dimensions or a template. For boat mattresses, make the template to the bed base and for bedding, make the template to the top surface of the mattress.

How long will my mattress order take to make?
Lead time for mattresses is normally 3-5 weeks from the time that all order details and payment is confirmed. In peak times lead times may be extended due to the large rush of orders we receive but we can give you a more accurate idea of timescales when you are placing your order. We always try to meet tight deadlines when possible so let us know if you have any time constraints!
Do I really need my mattress to be split, won’t it be uncomfortable?
Trying to squeeze your sprung mattress through the companion way will damage the construction and the covers and so it is much better to have it split. This also helps with manoeuvrability in and out of the cabin and access to lockers underneath your mattress. Our splits are seamless with no piping or uncomfortable joins or ridges. Your mattress will be made as one piece and then split so you know the pieces will fit together perfectly flush. Foam mattresses can usually be made in one piece unless for specific access reasons. Read more about how we make split boat mattresses here!
Can covers be removed easily and washed?
Yes, all of our boat mattresses and toppers are made with removable covers which are zipped down 1-2 edges to allow easy removal and replacement. The washing instructions vary between fabrics, so please find your specific fabric care instructions here or get in touch for more information.
How can I protect my new mattress from getting damp and mouldy like my previous one?
We strongly recommend using our DRY-Mat® anti-condensation underlay under your new mattress to protect it against damp and mould. To protect your mattress from everyday accidents like spills and stains, our mattress protectors will help prevent any accidental damage and keep it fresh and looking brand new. Find out more about mattress care here!
Are all your mattresses fire retardant?
All components used within our mattresses are fire retardant to UK standards.
What is the difference between memory foam and reflex foam?
Reflex Foam is a highly breathable marine foam which reflexes against you as you lie on it. This makes it very supportive and it helps keep you cool during the night. Memory foam moulds to your shape as it warms which gives it a sink in feel for a very comfortable night’s sleep. Memory foam isn’t usually breathable, but we have combined it with our DRY-Mat® product and breathable upgrades to reduce heat.
Can you send out samples to me?
Of course! We can send out samples of our fabric samples, both interior and exterior, and DRY-Mat®. Just let us know the address and we will get them ordered for you!
Why are your mattresses different to other companies/ domestic mattresses?
Here at Ship Shape, we have years of on hand experience in the marine world, so we know exactly what customers need from their mattresses. All our yacht, motor boat and canal boat mattresses are made with marine in mind and so are breathable, made by hand to fit precisely against any angle or taper, foam encapsulated so metal work doesn’t chafe against the hull, made with marinized metal work to prevent rust, made with removable and washable covers and are split to a perfect fit and with no piping or binding down the split line to give you a comfortable nights sleep. Read more about why our mattresses are the best here!

If we have a suitable template for the bed you need, then we can send a copy to you for just £15 which you can amend and send back as your own perfect template.

What are your fabric options for sheets?
We have 3 kinds of fabric for fitted sheets. Our easy-care fabric is made from 50% polyester and 50% cotton. It is very practical and doesn’t require ironing to retain a smooth finish. It is also quick drying and available in a large range of colours. Our 100% cotton fabric has a 200-thread count which gives a luxurious soft touch feel whilst being durable enough to withstand use on board. Our readymade fitted stretch sheets are made from 93% cotton and 7% elastane for a soft-touch feel and fit 95% of boat beds. They are supplied in white but can be dyed easily with home dying tabs- they take the colour really well!

Are your sheets elasticated?
Yes! Our readymade and custom sheets are elasticated around the base to help keep them securely onto your bed no matter the shape.

Our readymade mattress protectors are made with elastic straps at the corners which hold them on securely. Custom mattress protectors can be made with straps or drop sides which are better suited to rounded shaped beds as there are no corners to place the straps under.
Are the fitted sheets suitable for either port or starboard?
Yes, they are! They are stretchy in both directions to both the left and the right and so whether your bed is port or starboard, our sheets will fit like a glove.
What are your duvets made of?
All of our shaped duvets are made with hollowfibre filling as this doesn’t degrade or get musty over time due to the moisture which is more prevalent on board. Using a hollow fibre filling means that your duvet stays fresh and dry for an extra comfortable night’s sleep. They are also machine washable and hypo-allergenic! Learn more about our care instructions for duvets and bedding here!
Are pillow cases sold as pairs?
Our pillow cases are sold individually packed. To buy a pair, select the quantity as 2.

What are Strahl glasses made from?
Our Strahl glasses are made from highest quality polycarbonate. Designed in New Zealand they are the best in the world. Each glass in hand finished to give a truly unique shine and seamless condition. The glasses are also completely unbreakable and so mean no more worries about shards of broken glass on board! Discover more properties of Strahl here!
Will Strahl glasses scratch?
Unbreakable polycarbonate glasses may be scratched or damaged if cleaned with abrasive brushes or pads. Buffing with a microfibre glass polishing cloth may remove light scuffs. Polycarbonate may scratch if stacked together, except for the specially designed stacking tumblers. We recommend you wash your highest quality polycarbonate glasses in the dishwasher or by hand with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge.
Are my new glasses dishwasher safe?
Polycarbonate glasses are suitable for use in the dishwasher or hand washing with warm soapy water. Washing in steriliser may result in the build up of residue.
Acrylic glasses are NOT dishwasher safe and will crack and craze. Boiling water will also damage them so warm soapy water is recommended.
Are there any drinks I shouldn’t use in my new Strahl glasses?
The following aniseed-based drinks cannot be used with highest quality polycarbonate and they will leave a permanent stain: Pernod, Anis, Ricard, Raki and Ouzo.
Milky drinks may leave a residue if the glass is not washed with warm soapy water.
Can I microwave my melamine crockery?
Melamine is NOT suitable for use in a conventional oven or microwave.
Will melamine scratch or stain?
To Avoid scratches and stains, always follow the tips below:
Do Not use serrated knives on melamine products

Do Not use chlorine bleach on melamine products
Melamine products are NOT dishwasher safe
To avoid staining proper maintenance guides should be followed. Always wash products immediately after use and pre-soak if necessary to break down foods.
