Glossary of Ship Shape Terms
Foam EncapsulatedAll our mattresses have a foam layer around the sides and base. This means that there is foam protecting the wooden hull from metal work chaffing against it as the mattress gets laid on. It also means that we can profile the mattress to fit your hull perfectly.
Breathable, rubberised, non-slip base- All our mattress covers are made with a breathable, rubberised, non-slip base to aid ventilation and to help moisture ventilate vertically down to the DRY-Mat® layer underneath.
Orthopaedic support- Our sprung mattresses and our Marine+ foam mattresses all provide orthopaedic support. This means that your hips and shoulders can sink in more than your waist and legs. Your body is supported where it needs to be which means your spine stays in perfect alignment overnight helping you wake up without any aches or pains.
Marinized- This means that our metal work has been specially designed to not rust in a marine environment. All our mattresses are made with marine in mind which means we design them to prevent metal work from rusting and to keep the mattresses as ventilated as possible.
Butterfly hinges- Our sprung mattresses are made with butterfly hinges placed at access points to strengthen the spring structure, ensuring it doesn’t weaken over time. This prolongs the shape and life span of the mattress.
Breather vents – As standard, all our mattress covers are made with small vent holes in the exposed edges to aid ventilation and help moisture escape horizontally.
Breather channels- In our top of the range toppers and mattresses, the foam is designed with channels running throughout. This draws hot, humid air away from you, channelling it through the breather panel and keeping you cool overnight.
Breather panel- Our Marine+ mattress covers are made with a panel of breathable fabric on the exposed sides of the mattress. The panel works in conjunction with the breather channels and DRY-Mat® to aid ventilation and helps moisture escape horizontally.
Anti-roll sides- Firmer foam is placed on the exposed edge of he mattress to create a barrier which prevents you from rolling off the bed in rough weather.
DRY-Mat® – The bestselling anti-condensation underlay, a must for all marine mattresses. Read all about it here!
Seamless splits – We make our split mattresses as one piece and then split them, so we are confident the pieces will fit flush together. We never put piping or binding down the split line, ensuring you have a comfortable night’s sleep. To find out more about our split mattresses, click here!
Piping – An extra available on our mattresses which helps to strengthen the seams of the mattress and gives a domestic appearance. We never put piping down our split lines which means you have a super comfortable sleep with no ridges in the middle of the bed.
Tufting – Little tufts of fabric which are sewn into the cover and through the mattress. This gives a more domestic appearance to the mattress, but they do need to be removed and resewn every time you remove the cover for washing. Therefore, we don’t recommend having them on frequently used beds.
Special fabrics – We have a range of mattress covers which all have unique properties which make them perfect for marine use. To see a selection of our range, click here!
